The NFA was enacted June 26 1934 and is one of the earliest government infringements on our Second Amendment Rights. This act brought certain firearms and devices under the tax code rather than under . Under this act there is an excise tax on the manufacture and transfer of certain firearms and it mandates the registration of those firearms. These items are still legal but they carry an extra $200 tax stamp or Special Occupancy Tax (SOT) that must be paid for the privilege of purchasing these items. The stamp must be approved and received before the NFA item can be taken into your possession.
"Shall not be infringed,.." uh huh.
In any case give us a call at Tomcat Tactical Firearms and we can answer any questions, show you examples of each, or help you through the process of purchasing any NFA items!
"Silencer" or "Supressor"? You may have heard of arguments surround what these "mufflers" for guns are called. The original patent for this device was filed by inventor Charles H. Kenney on May 16, 1910 and was granted February 13, 1912. This patent was for what Kenney called "Silencer for firearms". So there you have it from the inventor himself. That said, they are referred to by both names so call it what you want.
YES they are legal! And a lot of fun while protecting your hearing!
Short barrel rifles or SBRs are considered any rifle that has a barrel of less than 16 inches OR an overall length of less than 26 inches. The famous Uzi 9mm with an installed shoulder stock like the one pictured is an SBR, without the stock it is a pistol.
You may have heard of a "sawed off shotgun". Well, be careful, if the barrel of a shotgun is less than 18 inches OR the overall length is under 26 inches then you have yourself a Short Barrel Shotgun or SBS. This too is an NFA item and regulated the same as silencers and SBRs. Just like an SBR you have an easier to wield firearm in close quarters and has useful tactical applications. This Mossberg 590A1 12 gauge with 14" barrel is a nice example of an SBS.
